Archbishop Charles Chaput of Philadelphia asks that all United States bishops stand courageously against the HHS Mandate. Archbishop Chaput states in a December 19 article: “America’s Catholic bishops cannot simply grumble and shrug, and go along with the mandate now, without implicating themselves in cowardice”.
He has asked his fellow bishops to imitate the sixteenth century English politician, St. Thomas More, who ferverently fought the English government and King Henry VIII, who wished to establish himself as the head of the church in England. History can be a powerful teacher, Chaput argues, stating, “The past can be a useful teacher. One of its lessons is this: The passage of time can invite confusion and doubt — and both work against courage.”
