Latino Catholics….Tomorrow’s Catholic Citizen and Vote

ImageGetting to know the Latino population in our nation is important.  Increasingly the building trades are staffed by skilled roofers, carpenters, electricians and plumbers for whom English is not their first language, but for whom the Roman Catholic Mass is their first true home.  In South Carolina approximately half of the Catholics in that (otherwise overwhelmingly Baptist) state were Latino, and half of them were illegally present in the country.  This meant that education and sacramental ministries were difficult.  Identification was often a ruse and a game with any authority.  Yet, many Latinos are legal residents and citizens.  The mess of our current lack of enforcement of the southern border as well as the high number of illegal aliens takes a huge toll on valuable lives, especially young lives.  Here are some figures from the Acton Institute (www.acton.org) on the religious life of Latinos in the USA:  http://blog.acton.org/archives/68766-7-figures-shifting-religious-identity-u-s-latinos.html#more-68766
